Did you know that modern day Pharisee’s exist and can be found among all sects and denominations within Christianity? In fact, by analyzing history and having a correct understanding of scripture, one will know that the scribes and Pharisee’s have always been at the head of the mainstream Christian establishment.
This should not be a surprise. Did you know that the first place where Jesus casted out a devil was not at a nightclub or in some back alley, rather it was at a church!
See for yourself:
Mark 1
King James Version (KJV)
21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
That was just a warning so that you know how feasible it is for Pharisee’s to be among you as well. So why should you be vigilant and mindful of Pharisee’s? The answer is simple. They can be lumped in the same category as false prophets because they take on the title of a steward of good faith and pronounce to be of the Lord, but in actuality they are far from God!
You do not need to look hard to see that the Pharisee’s and Sadducee’s (religious leaders) of old, did not beleive that Jesus was the Messiah. The common agenda of these religious leaders can be summed up in one verse:
Matthew 12:14
King James Version (KJV)
14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
- Only grave ignorance and carnal pride would allow you to conspire against the God of all spirits – Jesus.
Throughout Jesus’ entire ministry, the so called wise religious leaders of the day claimed to be pious and fooled many into thinking they were so. However, in reality this was not the case. Even though they had the name of God on their lips, with their bible in hand, they denied Christ. You may wonder, how can you deny Christ even though you say you love him and do things in his name?
Paul answers this question:
Titus 1:16
King James Version (KJV)
16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
- The religious people of Jesus’ day were like whitened sepulchre’s. They were aesthetically pleasing on the outside but inside they were full of death and decay. They did things to be praised by men without correctly upholding God’s eternal law!
Matthew 23:23,25
King James Version (KJV)
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
- They worshipped God with their lips but their heart was far from him. They were not renewed in spirit because if they were, they would have been OBEYING God’s commandments!!
Matthew 15:1-9
King James Version (KJV)
1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Conclusions:
1) If you profess to know and love Jesus, then it will be seen by your actions lining up with his commandments and not the commandments and traditions of men!
Luke 6:46
King James Version (KJV)
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
John 14:15
King James Version (KJV)
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
1 John 2:3-5
King James Version (KJV)
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
2) Understand that you will reap what you sow and that you CANNOT FOOL GOD.
Galatians 6:7-8
King James Version (KJV)
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
3) BEWARE of the doctrine and mindset of the Pharisee’s/ Sadducee’s!!
Matthew 16:6-12
King James Version (KJV)
6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.
8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?
9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
